Outdoor Activities in Thailand: Water Sports and Entertainment

Both investors and end users purchase real estate in Thailand, the former for profit, and the latter for permanent residence and seasonal holidays. While many holidaymakers preferred to lounge on the beach before, a more active pastime has become popular lately.

Thailand is one of the countries whose economy is highly dependent on tourism. For this reason, it has a well-developed entertainment infrastructure, which is focused on visitors. In this article, we will look at water sports that you can do in the kingdom.

Spearfishing

One of the main spearfishing spots in the country is a fishing community called Bang Sare on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand, south of the popular resort of Pattaya. It is in demand among those who love hooking sharks, tuna, and marlin. You can fish in the Indian Ocean at ports such as Ranong and Phuket.

Scuba diving

The kingdom offers excellent opportunities to diving enthusiasts. In the tranquil Gulf of Thailand, some of the world’s best dive sites, according to many fans of this sport, are Sattahip, Pattaya, Rayong, and Surat Thani, as well as a dive centre on Koh Samui.

The best dive sites on the coast of the Indian Ocean are Similan and Phuket, as well as a station on the island of Koh Tarutao in Tarutao National Marine Park. All these sites have specialised shops where anyone can not only buy modern equipment for professional diving but also take a small training course designed for beginner divers.

Windsurfing

There is a windsurfing centre in Pattaya, which is highly appreciated by fans of this sport. It is located on Jomtien Beach. Its branches also operate on the islands of Phuket and Koh Samui. There are also small, well-equipped centres for windsurfers in the city of Cha-am on the Andaman Sea and the city of Hua Hin in the north of the Gulf of Thailand.

Regattas

National sea or river boat races take place throughout the country every year. Competitions are often held as part of festivals celebrating the end of the rainy season.

Long wooden boats take part in the races, which competitors decorate with ribbons and flowers. The most spectacular races are held in the cities of Ayutthaya, Surat Thani, Nan, and Pathum Thani, which is located near Bangkok.

During such races, boats are usually driven by local residents, but foreigners can also participate in regattas.

For example, The Bay Regatta is held in the kingdom every year. The competition takes place in late January/early February in the bay between Phuket Island and Krabi Province. Races start and finish in Phuket.

Both experienced yachtsmen and beginners can take part in the regatta. The programme includes five racing days. In 2023, the competition was held from February 22 to 26. The next races will run from January 31 to February 4, 2024.

Besides opening and closing receptions at the beginning and end of the regatta, there are mini-parties with intermediate prizes awarded in each division every evening. At buffets, participants are treated to beer, wine, Thai rum, and fruit.

There is also another important annual regatta called the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta. The event is organised under the patronage of the King of Thailand and under the auspices of the Royal Thai Navy and Phuket Province.

Competitions are held in the first week of December, near the western coast of Phuket. Races last six days and start at nine a.m.

The regatta organisers take its conduct very seriously: participants can be disqualified even for obscene language.

During the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, there are several parties with intermediate prizes awarded for each day and a final award ceremony at the end.

Diving

Diving in the kingdom is one of the most popular pastimes. In the east of the Gulf of Thailand, weather conditions allow diving all year round, but the best visibility there lasts from November to March, while in the west, from February to May. The season in the Andaman Sea starts in November and ends in May.

In the vicinity of Phuket, divers have the opportunity to observe the most exotic marine life. Giant manta rays and whale sharks swim in the waters of Koh Racha from January to March. Shark Point is home to moray eels, leopard sharks, and rays.

Dive sites are available at any resort in Thailand, and they operate both independently and at almost every four- or five-star hotel. Most of these centres are located in Phuket and Pattaya.

There are quite a few dive resorts, shops, and schools on Koh Samui. The best dive sites are near the island of Koh Tao as you can spot barracudas, turtles, and reef sharks. Koh Surin National Marine Park, located 77 km west of Ranong Province, is considered by many divers to be the best whale shark spot in the world and one of the best dive sites in all of Thailand.

Water activities

In almost all resorts in Thailand on the beach, you can rent swimming and water activities equipment. The rental of sailing and rowing boats, water bikes, parasailing boats, and other watercraft is included in the service package of each beach. Jomtien Beach and Phuket are more developed than others in this sense.
