Thailand's Interior Ministry calls for increased measures to combat COVID-19 during Songkran

Songkran is Thai New Year. This is the most important holiday in Thailand, which is traditionally celebrated with mass events on the streets of the city on April 13-15 every year.

The government has banned mass events on Songkran for the third year in a row. Any parties and concerts must be approved by the local administration.

After this year's Songkran celebration, the government is asking people to work from home whenever possible and monitor for COVID-19 symptoms for 7-10 days. Thais across the country are returning to their home provinces for a holiday from major cities, which leads to the spread of the virus.

The abolition of all offensive restrictions on entry into the country by June 2022 will depend on the incidence rates after Songkran.
